Thanks in part to today’s throwaway culture, clothes are being designed, produced and discarded quicker than ever before – with many usable yet seemingly unfashionable garments being thrown straight into landfill instead of being recycled, upcycled, or sent to a good second home.
It’s not all doom and gloom. Having been compelled to act thanks to the stances of fervent environmental campaigners, including Sweden’s Greta Thunberg, many fashion companies, from big brands to smaller boutique designers, are changing their production methods in order to lessen the impact that their work is having on the planet.
But more can always be done to encourage sustainability in a sector that has come under fire in recent times for its devastating carbon impact. We’re finding that an increasing number of our customers are looking for easy and cost-effective ways to do their bit for the environment – and as such, many are choosing to use organic cotton labels within their garments instead of those crafted from plastic and other materials that take many years to degrade.
What makes cotton labels so environmentally friendly?
Cotton labels are a much more eco-conscious choice because the farming techniques that are used to develop organic cotton are much kinder to the earth.
Fertilisers and pesticides are never used within the production of organically grown cotton, which means that the land remains clean and free of toxins (and the local water supply isn’t contaminated with unwanted chemicals). Plus, before the cotton plants are even allowed to be planted, the land will be left fallow for a while to make sure pollutants are kept well away from the growth process, resulting in the creation of a good quality yet fully sustainable material that has the added benefit of being suitable for sensitive skin.
Are cotton labels just as easy to customise as traditional plastic labels?
The short answer is, yes!
Not only are cotton labels wonderfully soft and tactile, they can also be printed in a similar way to our other products to produce high definition graphics that won’t fade, even after many machine washes.
We can work with designs that include up to six colours, and the labels can be supplied with mitre fold, end fold or loop folded. We offer a selection of widths ranging from 10mm to 20mm, and there’s no restriction on the length of your labels whatsoever.
